Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action (AVA) will be closing our Magpie Inverurie project on 30th June.
There has been much speculation that the main reason for making this decision is that the unit rental cost is very high. We can confirm that the AVA Board in making the decision to close Inverurie Magpie assessed a range of factors that would likely impact on the sustainability of the Project going forward and this was not simply about the rent.
AVA needs to respond to falling sales and income at the Magpie outlets and in particular Inverurie, which is no longer viable to run with a continuing downturn in footfall and sales. This trend is not peculiar to Magpie, many charitable retail outlets are suffering in the same way. The retail sector overall is struggling and this is no different with tough online competition.
AVA has had to look at re-structuring the business and it is highly regrettable that staff will potentially be made redundant. Our staff have been fantastic over the years, totally dedicated to the project and we pay tribute to our many volunteers who have contributed for so long. It has been a very hard decision to take and not one taken lightly. Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action cannot continue to sustain such losses because our core business of helping communities would suffer.
Banchory Magpie is open for business and we continue to put resource into it. We need the public to rally to our charitable cause and support us and indeed volunteers to come forward and help.
